CENTRAL PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Charlotte, NC                                                              January 2010-Present

Founded in 1963, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) is the largest community college in North Carolina and a national leader in workforce development.

Executive Director - Services Corporation

The CPCC Services Corporation operates much like a venture capitalist firm, investing in projects of the College that generate more than $2 Million in unrestricted revenue annually and align with the College mission.

  • Oversee eight College projects/businesses with a staff of 16 for the second largest Community College in the country. Projects include: CPCC Performing Arts & Events Facilities, Harris Conference Center, the Center for Applied Research, CPCC Press and Collegiate Test Prep.

  • Oversee a departmental budget of $2.6 Million.

  • Conceptualize and implement strategic marketing initiatives for eight projects/businesses across all media platforms to support projects and achieve sales goals.

  • Support the business ideas and entrepreneurial efforts of college faculty and staff which align with institutional objectives and generate revenue for the college.

  • Developed and published websites featuring new photography, interactive seating charts and floor plans to inform and attract new corporate clients and enhance sales goals. Website traffic has increased 70 to 90% since the launch of the websites in October 2010.

  • Serve as Co-Chair of the President's Entrepreneurial Team. Member of the President's Leadership Council, Executive Vice-President Council and the Richard H. Hagemeyer Committee.

CAROLINAS CONCERT ASSOCIATION, Charlotte, NC                                                                         March 2008-May 2009

79-year old association, dedicated to presenting concerts featuring world-renowned performing artists and sponsoring arts education outreach initiatives.

Executive Director

Recruited to carve a new niche, create a brand, broaden appeal, strengthen corporate/foundation partnerships and expand education outreach. Provide financial oversight; manage a $500,000 operating budget and four investment funds at the Foundation for the Carolinas. Transitioned to volunteer staff.

  • Manage budget under financial constraints: Analyzed sales trends and projected revenues. Streamlined the budget, conducted a cash flow analysis. Reduced operating costs and effectively managed expenses which resulted in a significant increase over initial projections.

  • Instituted programs to increase ticket sales: Recommended new business model to reflect Charlotte’s changing market. Initiated innovative marketing techniques to attract a more diverse audience. Revamped the website to be more interactive, informative and user-friendly.

  • Forged new and strengthened existing partnerships: Worked to create partnerships and strengthen alliances among corporations and foundations. Increased funding from the Arts & Science Council by 19 percent.

  • Strategic Marketing: Developed a marketing study/survey to broaden understanding of CCA’s audience. Collaborated with design firms to create innovative marketing collateral promoting a new vision with a fresh look and logo. Worked with local radio stations on promotional giveaways.

THE ARTS EXPERIENCE (TAE), Concord, NC                                                                                                           1992-2007

National and state award-winning nonprofit 501c3 organization, providing arts education programs for children of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Serves 700+ youth and 45 area schools annually.  Supervised a full and part-time staff of 32.

President/Executive Director

  • Won 1999 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant to partner with the American Composers Forum to host Continental Harmony, a composer-in-residence program, awarded nationwide to one arts organization per state. 

  • Founded TAE as one solution to address community relations issues facing a multi-cultural neighborhood with few opportunities for cultural exchange and positive interaction. 

  • Developed the vision to promote cross-cultural exchange and achievement through an arts education program that would bring together children of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

  • Built grassroots support for the vision among community residents, business leaders, school administrators, social service agencies and churches.  

  • Sold the vision and business plan to Fortune 500 corporations and foundations; raising more than $2.7 million through grants from corporations, national, state and local foundations and individuals.

  • Cultivated corporate partnerships, including Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, ClearChannel Entertainment Philip Morris USA, Bank of America and Wachovia.

  • Developed strategic alliances, partnering with two public school systems, UNC system professors, community agencies and churches to enhance programming and support at-risk families. 

  • Positioned TAE as a dynamic, influential community partner: Worked directly with print, broadcast and online media to raise awareness. Created marketing; collaborating with advertising and marketing  consultants. Developed collateral, and aligned strategic marketing initiatives through the development of the corporate promotional video, newsletters, brochures, website and other online media.   

  • Featured in publications and on television; frequent guest speaker at civic organizations, on local cable access and radio.
